Mark Harmon wasn’t initially the obvious choice for the role of Larry Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. A-list actors like Harrison Ford were considered, but it never went beyond discussions. Other names in consideration included Charlie Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and Kevin Bacon.
However, Mark Harmon’s prior work on “The West Wing” and with JAG caught the attention of producer Donald P. Bellisario, who eventually cast him as Gibbs in 2003. Despite initial doubts, Harmon’s performance solidified his place, and he went on to play Gibbs for 19 seasons. The show’s creators, including executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson, faced casting challenges but were ultimately impressed with Harmon’s strong presence.
